To Save A Child
To Save A Child © was born out of the understanding that the seeds of suicidal
ideation often take root at an early age.  Manifestations of depression and mood
disorders in children are observed by teachers in school classrooms each day.
As daily witnesses to changes in behavior, verbal clues, and mood problems,
teachers are one of the best resources for catching the warning signs before a
child’s sadness, anger, or pain propel him or her towards suicide.

Dr. Bill Finnegan, a school psychologist, created a booklet
Help Me I'm Sad, Help
Me I'm Mad
which was designed to assist teachers in identifying warning signs of
student depression.  From this booklet, a short, award-winning film, narrated by
Marial Hemingway was produced to provide additional support to those
associated with identifying students at risk.  The award-winning film was
produced by Kathleen Adams, directed by Eric Adams, and funded by Linda
Lorentzen.

Through the words of parents, school staff, and psychologists, the film provides
some hints for deciding when to seek assessment for a student.  The film is not
designed to educate teachers on how to diagnose or label a child, but rather to
encourage teachers to courageously intervene by identifying the need for further
assessment.
